Theatre Tokens, the unique theatre gift voucher scheme run by The Society of London Theatre (SOLT), saw sales of almost £10million in 2011, in spite of pressure on the high street and the continuing economic downturn. This record breaking performance can be celebrated as further demonstration of the resilience of the theatre industry and the popularity of theatre amongst UK consumers in the face of squeezed incomes, high inflation and economic gloom.

More people than ever before chose to give Theatre Tokens, which are valid at theatres across the country with no expiry date, as the gift of theatre for Christmas 2011. Online sales channels saw the biggest increase in 2011, with online sales up over 25%. Phone sales via the Tokenline hotline were also up 10% on 2010.

Sales of Theatre Tokens are dependent on strong pre-Christmas trading, with over 50% of total sales taking place in the fourth quarter. This year saw a trend of late purchasing on the part of the consumer with sales steady in October but up significantly in November and December.

The Theatre Tokens Christmas campaign helped to generate these strong November and December sales with promotions and advertising on London Underground and commuter routes into London, in the national press, on Classic FM radio, and online.

Theatre Tokens plans to continue to grow its business by exploring and exploiting new methods of selling to consumers. With 2012 come plans to work with key suppliers to utilise mobile platforms and Facebook channels, as well as exploring options for the distribution of e-vouchers.

Waterstones Wanes !

Waterstones profits slump 70% after 'disappointing' year.

HMV Group has described the 2009/10 performance of Waterstones as "disappointing" as profits slumped by more than 70% to £2.8m.

As reported at the end of April, like-for-like sales fell 6.2% during the 12 month period to 24th April, while total sales dropped 6.3% to £513.6m.

It caps a tumultuous year for the bookseller, during which it experienced supply problems through its centralised book hub, made 650 staff redundant and saw former managing director Gerry Johnson leave the company in January. Johnson's departure, along with other senior figures including former commercial director Neil Jewsbury, cost the business £1.7m in "management restructuring costs". It had total exceptional costs of £2.7m for the year.

HMV Group primarily blamed the slump in profit in a "disappointing sales performance", led by an offer that focused too much on promotions, in addition to the exceptional costs. It said: "The sales performance was particularly disappointing through the autumn and the key Christmas season, as the delayed implementation of supply chain changes through the book hub reduced stock availability and weakened our store proposition."

Market share declined by 1% during the year, during which time the book market itself fell 2.6%.

BLACKWELLS - boom to bust?

Blackwell UK has made an operating loss of nearly £9.4m for its most recent financial year, and is blaming supermarkets and e-tailers for hitting sales and eroding margins through "buying" sales with excessive discounting.

For the 12 months to 27th June 2009, Blackwell UK saw turnover fall from £77.8m to £74.2m. Although costs were also reduced - from £56.6m to £54.9m - administrative expenses rose more than £1m to £28.7m, resulting in an operating loss of £9.4m. The retailer lost roughly £6m the previous year.

As a result, the company's board is planning yet another restructuring, what appears to be the third in as many years. This restructuring will be combined with "a continuous improvement plan in a number of critical services areas" to reduce losses, the company said. Blackwell has already undergone one series of restructures since Andrew Hutchings became chief executive in September 2008, which resulted in the combining of the retail and library supply businesses into one operation, and the departure of commercial director Sue Townsend.

In the review of the business, the directors described it as a "challenging year". The review added: "The bookselling industry in both academic and trade sectors endured unprecedented level of discounting, which damaged sales and margins across all categories.

"This was also evidenced in the market share growths for both supermarket and online retail, where sales were bought at the cost of low margins or break-even deals."

The retailer's library services arm also had a "challenging year", with the report saying "we saw downturns across all markets against the previous year", as a result of funding cut backs and unfavourable exchange rates, owing to the economic situation.

However, the company emphasised that "extensive work around lean methodology meant we were able to take substantial cost out of the business".

In December 2009, Blackwell secured a new three-year loan from Toby Blackwell Ltd for £7m, replacing the asset-based lending facility, which ended that month. In May last year Toby Blackwell told The Bookseller that he had secured the future of the Blackwell bookshop chain as a private business by setting up an "impervious" 80-year trust that will take ownership of the voting shares after he dies.

Blackwell sold the North American division of Blackwell Book Services to US distributor Baker & Taylor in December last year.

Electronic Book Tokens Now 2010

The launch of electronic Book Tokens has been delayed once again.

The Booksellers Association has postponed the launch of its electronic National Book Tokens gift card until next year, citing "an ongoing regulatory issue" caused by a third party as the cause.

The launch date has been pushed back several times, having initially been scheduled for launch in 2006 or 2007. At its 2008 a.g.m, the BA said the gift card scheme would come on stream in early 2009, and a pilot has been running since June which, in August, was described as "going very well".

We will therefore be continuing to issue the traditional paper book vouchers until further notice, with all orders £100 and over weekdays, being sent free for next day delivery (UK only).

Waterstones Still Performs Poor

In its latest set of financial results, Waterstones reported that in the year to 25th April 2009, both total and like-for-like sales fell by 3.8%, with full-year sales now likely to be about £543m, compared with £564.3m a year earlier.

In the 16 weeks to 25th April total sales at the book retailer fell by 3.4% and by 4.5% on a like-for-like basis. The trend therefore continues.

One customer reports today:

I have just been into my local branch of Waterstones in Colchester High Street. There was one member of staff serving on the two floors. The were 5 people waiting in a line with purchases. One gave up and put a book back on the shelf. There was no other member of staff anywhere to be seen. I was there to drop in a DVD sample we have made with a view to selling it in. I walked all round the store to see if other staff members were there. None to be found. After about 10 minutes another staff member came to the sales desk. If this is what Waterstone's have / are coming to then the company has a shortened shelf life.

ArgentVive plc, formerly samedaybooks.co.uk, has entered into Administration. The Company appointed Paul Appleton and Henry Lan of chartered accountants and insolvency specialists David Rubin & Partners as Administrators on Monday 23rd March 2009.

ArgentVive has retail stores in Chertsey and Worthing. It also had an online portfolio including an e-tailer www.samedaybooks.com and www.bookrabbit.com, a hybrid social networking site which provided a platform for people who like the same books to meet, share opinions and make recommendations. The businesses currently employ approximately 30 staff. The Administrators are seeking a sale of the stores and websites as a whole entity, or individually.

ArgentVive initially comprised seven retail book stores and under new ownership acquired three internet businesses. It was unable to secure sufficient funding to invest in its various acquisitions and has been selling off these businesses since autumn 2008.

"The retail stores in Worthing and Chertsey have a loyal customer following, are based in prime locations and both websites are well-respected in the industry," commented Paul Appleton of David Rubin & Partners. "ArgentVive shifted its strategic focus from retail and, as such, a great deal of investment has been spent on the online offerings. With the rise in popularity of social networking sites, we are confident that the business has much to offer a potential purchaser."

Apparently many of you have fallen foul of rogue traders whilst buying your Book Tokens online and your Theatre Tokens online during November and December 2008.
It seems that the problems you have encountered ranged from internet sellers misleading consumers into believing they were buying genuine Official Theatre Tokens and then being sent an inferior theatre voucher, through to internet sellers with misleading adverts for National Book Tokens that claimed 'free next day delivery' but their service did not actually provide this and indeed many of you have reported to us that you did not receive your Book Tokens at all.

Woolworths Today - Waterstones Tomorrow?

Waterstone's total sales fell to £235.1m over its half-year to 25th October from £244.5m a year earlier, representing a like-for-like sales decline of 3.1% (1.4% decline after adjusting for the prior year release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). HMV said this reflected a very challenging book market, which contracted by over 5% in the period, impacted particularly by poor performance in the non-fiction category.

The book chain's operating loss rose to £9.3m, compared with £8.9m a year earlier, but this included a £1.5m year-on-year increase in costs from the 'BookHub' supply chain implementation. HMV said the the underlying improvement in the operating loss reflected a 60 basis point increase in gross margin (after adjusting for Harry Potter) and tight control of operating costs (which fell 1.2%), more than offsetting the sales decline.

The HMV Group, owners of Waterstones generated a seasonal operating loss of £22.8m in the period (2007 £21.5m).

WATERSTONES CONTINUES TO WANE

Waterstone's has seen a downturn in sales over the summer reflecting what it called a "weaker book market". The chain reported that like-for-like sales had dropped by 1.7% since its year-end on 26th April even when the effects of the last Harry Potter book are removed from the figures.

The figures, for the 18 weeks ended 30th August 2008, show like-for-like sales down by 4.3% when the first eight days sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which was released on 21 July 2007, are included in last year's figures. Total sales at the chain dropped by 5.9%. The group said that a "well-executed marketing strategy ensured that market share was maintained".

Waterstone's managing director Gerry Johnson told The Bookseller that footfall was quieter than last year: "It's not as strong as we have been but there are two contributing factors. The first is, as everybody knows, it's a tough market. Then there is Harry Potter - when you had a quarter of a million people outside of stores last year there was a clear halo effect. But I am really pleased with market share. We were maintaining it and are now growing it."

Johnson also lamented the lack of big titles: "We were clearly missing big titles in non-fiction this year - there was a lack of a God Delusion or Alistair Campbell." But he added: "Looking ahead we are in a great place with the reward card, we have a very very stong academic offer and there are good titles to come."

The figures, which are released by parent HMV Group, as part of its interim management statement, show the music chain, HMV, faring better, with like-for-like sales growth of 4.3% in HMV UK & Ireland, and HMV International's like-for-like sales growth of 2.9%. Overall the HMV Group saw like-for-like sales up 1.3%, or by 2.2% excluding Harry Potter. HMV chief executive Simon Fox said: "In what is, undoubtedly, a tough consumer environment, the solid start made by the group to the new financial year means that our plans are in line with the board's expectations, and I remain confident that our strategic initiatives are on track"

Blackwell Decline Continues

Blackwell Retail Makes 30 Redundant :

Some 30 staff at academic bookseller Blackwell have been made redundant following a store restructure. David Prescott, head of retail operations at the firm, said the staff came from a number of shops and held “varying roles and responsibilities”.

New shop structures have now been rolled-out across the chain. Prescott said the job losses were part of “the ongoing turnround plan” for Blackwell Retail, which earlier this year announced a loss of £7.6m for the year ended June 2007 and warned it would not make a profit in the next financial year.

“Our shop structures were felt to be very inconsistent, did not allow us to match sales patterns and did not allow adequate flexibility,” said Prescott. “We had inconsistent roles throughout the chain and this therefore made succession planning difficult and too cost-heavy. As such it made it difficult to manage our productivity and performance.”

Prescott said the changes resulting from the store review had allowed Blackwell to give the managers of each shop “greater control of their payroll management and localised trading patterns”. He added: “These decisions have been taken at a local level and will help to ensure that shops are able to meet their local customers’ needs.” Consultation was ongoing with a small number of people, the company added.

They soon will need more volunteer helpers to assist with craft, cooking and basic life skill session delivery, people who will be able to spare a few hours a week staffing the new reception and dealing with duty referrals from young people.
The new Hinge Centre will open its doors in Autumn 2008 with a celebration event in order to officially launch this service provision. It will be a themed day incorporating a BBQ, Buffet and Open Day for all residents of Bridlington. We have already received confirmation that the local press will be attending together with representatives of East Riding Council Regeneration Team.
Anyone who can kindly contributes to the centre will be formally recognised within the local media and it is also our intention to have a plaque prepared giving details of all who made donations both financially and in kind to the centre.

Blackwell - deeper in the red!

Academic bookseller Blackwell has shrugged off a loss of £7.6m in 2007, but warned that it will not make a profit in its next trading year.

In figures for the 12 months to end-June 2007, turnover at the 60-store Blackwell chain fell to £77.2m from £79.7m the previous year. Its £7.6m losses were also worse than the previous year’s trading, when it lost £6.9m.

Stephen Harlow, non-executive chairman at Blackwell, said that the trading period did not include Blackwell’s three-year turnaround plan, which will only start to show results in the retailer’s next trading statement. “It’s not been a good year for selling books in the traditional market,” he said. “It’s been tough but we do feel that to an extent we are bucking the trend. [In the year since June 2007] we have seen some growth and we are on target for the first year of our turnaround plan.”

Since the end of the financial results period Blackwell has announced that it is to take its business abroad, with branches to open in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East by the end of 2008.

Harlow said that while the business is currently performing better, he still anticipates a loss for the year ending June 2008. “We now have the resources to fund that loss. The next step for 08/09 is to stop losing money and make the business cash neutral. In the third year the business will be brought to the surface.”

Borders Wins The Booby Prize?

Further to last months posting, it seems that BORDERS BOOKS & MUSIC is the weakest link! This has been announced today:

'Borders books £9.75m loss. Book chain Borders said today that it had plunged to a near-£10 million loss over the second quarter as sales dipped four per cent to £453m.
The group, booked a loss of £9.75m, which was in line with analysts' expectations but was a major reversal from the £688,778 surplus it scored over the same quarter the year before. Like-for-like sales at its Borders superstores fell 5.3 per cent'

By comparison, current turnover at First Bookshop is up in excess of 50% compared to the same period last year.

Due to continuing mounting losses, Borders have announced they are to pull out of the UK
Total losses for 2006 amounted to $150m - losses during the last quarter alone stood at $73m
They hope that a sale of the UK stores for around £50m should help to keep the business afloat in the US

Weak Waterstones?

Waterstone’s like-for-like sales fell 6.1% for the nine weeks to 1st July 2006, as “trading conditions in the first few weeks of the new financial year have remained difficult,” parent company HMV said today. The decline follows a 5.8% like-for-like decrease in the year to 29th April 2006, which the company described as a “very poor trading performance”. The chain’s total sales fell by 4.8% to £418.7m in the year. Waterstone’s has initiated a £10m integration programme for Ottakar’s, closing its offices in Salisbury, Clapham and London Bridge with 114 people at risk of redundancy. Ottakar's 142 stores will be rebranded as Waterstone's by Christmas, with no store closures immediately planned. Can 142 'new stores' stimulate an increase in sales? We tend to think not, as the stores involved will loose their unique identity overnight, causing loyal customers to 'jump ship'. Perhaps their salvation will be the launch later this year of a proper Waterstones website, then again perhaps not - think they have well and truly missed the boat on that one!
Waterstone's main high street competitor BORDERS has just announced that their losses in the second-quarter, ending 29th July '06, will be greater than expected.

Blackwells Hit Rock Bottom

Just announced - Blackwell Ltd, the academic bookselling and library supply business, made an operating loss of £10.1m in the year to 2nd July 2005. The loss, up from £6.6m the previous year, came on total sales of £158.5m, down from £186m. By comparison profits remain healthy at FirstBookshop.com - the year just completed, ending March '06, saw sales up by over 113%. A considerable number of First Bookshop's customers are ex AUSTICKS book shoppers - the firm that Blackwell's bought out in Leeds a number of years back and then irrationally shut down all stores bar one - an out of town campus shop, one that the average Leeds consumer would never go to. Fortunately their loss is our gain :)

Retailers expecting worst Christmas for twenty years.
The Guardian reports that retailers are expecting their worst Christmas since at least 1983 after seeing the sharpest fall in sales volume on record last month, according to the CBI's distributive trades survey.
The Guardiang reports: "Store chains are still hoping for a pre-Christmas rush, but 38% of retailers expect to take less than last year and only 15% expect to sell more."
Mr Roger Bernard Crossland, owner of FirstBookshop.Com, says this is mainly due to the continued change in shopping habits in favour of the internet and online shopping, often with smaller specialist retailers. Theatre Tokens are national UK theatre gift vouchers - the ultimate theatre gifts.
They enable the recipient to choose the show or play they want to see, where and when.
Theatre Token gift certificates were created to actively promote theatre-going nationwide.
They can be redeemed at over 225 theatres nationwide, including all in London and of course London's West End.
Theatre Tokens were launched in 1984, last year celebrating 20 years. They form part of a non-profit making trade association, The Society of London Theatre (SOLT).
Using Theatre Tokens :
UK national theatre gift tokens can be exchanged for tickets by the following methods:
Personal Bookings - in person at the box office. You can also exchange Theatre Tokens for tickets for London theatres, at the tkts Ticket Booth in London's Leicester Square and the tkts Kiosk at London's Canary Wharf DLR Station.
Postal Bookings - write to the box office enclosing the Theatre Tokens and giving alternative performance dates if possible. If the value of the ticket(s) exceeds the value of the Theatre Tokens, please enclose a cheque for the difference.
Telephone Bookings - certain theatres will accept reservations made by telephone. Please contact the box office for availability and specific instructions. Some theatres will hold reservations for a specified period until they receive your Theatre Tokens (by post or by hand). Other theatres require receipt of your Theatre Tokens before a reservation can be made. When telephoning some theatres, you may be put through to 'Ticketmaster', who are able to accept reservations made with Theatre Tokens.
When redeeming, both parts of the Theatre Token must be handed over. A Theatre Token without an audit stub is not valid.
