New London Theatre Accepts Our Gift Vouchers

St. James Theatre is the first newly built theatre complex in central London for 30 years. It features a 312 seat theatre and a 100 seat studio theatre and a brasserie and lobby bar offering delicious food, fine wines and cocktails. St. James Theatre also incorporates a full broadcast TV facility enabling shows to be broadcast on BskyB and to a worldwide audiences via online television.

Its location in SW1 alongside Buckingham Palace offers visitors the chance to step away from the crowded pavements of the West End and take sanctuary in the peaceful neighbourhood of the modern St James Theatre.

The building was designed by Foster Wilson Architects and features a sculptured staircase designed by international award winning artist designer, Mark Humphrey. Crafted in Pietra Santa, by Porcelli Marmi, where Michelangelo carved David, the work of art staircase celebrates the best of British design alongside Italian craftsmanship.

St. James’ Creative Director Robert Mackintosh always felt London Theatre distinctly lacked smaller, off-Broadway type theatres seating less than 500 people to develop shows prior to moving to the West End. In 1996 when he was producing Joey and Gina’s Wedding, finding a suitable 200-300 seater venue proved exceedingly difficult, to the point that the company ended up developing the basement of CafĂ© Royal on Regent Street, where the production ran for over a year.

When the opportunity came up to develop a theatre on the site of 12 Palace Street, Robert says he was immediately interested as it offered the possibility of developing a new venue from scratch. As soon as the possibility of acquiring the building became a reality, he started to develop his vision, building on his experience of successful small venues and adding ideas of his own. As it turned out the building contained more than Robert had hoped for; with not only a main theatre but also a studio to give the best flexibility and ensuring the St. James Theatre complex is a destination for all live entertainment.

NOW CELEBRATING ITS FIRST YEAR !

In September 2012 the theatre opened its doors for the first time with a performance of Sandi Toksvig’s Bully Boy, starring Anthony Andrews and Joshua Miles and shortly afterwards the St. James studio space began showcasing excellent comedy, jazz and caberet.

Garforth Bookshop Main Street Premises Closure

Don't panic !

Even though the 'bricks and mortar' shop has now closed, you can still 'click and order' on the original Garforth Bookshop website, which is still live online and trading as normal.

This very first domain was accessed at www.garforthbkz.com and launched in 1999 and has traded from there continually ever since.

A more user friendly site of global interest was launched by us the following year, after we became the very first for book tokens online and this name was appropriately chosen as www.firstbookshop.com

Although our founder Roger Bernard Crossland sold the shop, located on Garforth Main Street in 2003 his internet domains all went from strength to strength and now number 100. The plan was to concentrate purely on ecommerce, which he did at a new purposely designed freehold office in Bridlington, from after the sale.

An offer was made several times in the years following 2003 to the new owners of the shop business Byron & Louise Godfrey, to build exclusively for them a free new bespoke website, to retail books direct from Main Street, Garforth, Leeds, but due to their lethargy this offer was never taken up. A very great shame that was, as excellent domains names had been secured for them specifically for this purpose, these being www.booksgb.com and www.booksgb.co.uk to represent 'Books Garforth Bookshop' but thereby also giving their business a national and international ring to it, as this also stood for 'Books Great Britain'.

Today the shop has gone, Byron & Louise have gone, plus Baraka who took over from Byron & Louise, has gone too.

Things could have been so very, very different., but at least Roger is still here, his bookselling domains are still here and many of his customers going right back to his beginnings with WHSmith in 1974 still remain customers and friends today!

It can help you escape to another world and get out of your everyday life. ‘There’s lots of evidence that reading can really help you relax and escape and this is a good strategy for dealing with stress and anxiety.’ The scheme was announced yesterday by the Society of Chief Librarians as part of a new national strategy for Britain’s libraries. It will run alongside the ‘Books on Prescription’ scheme, which allows GPs to ‘prescribe’ self-help books stocked at local libraries. On each prescription leaflet will also be a recommendation for the patient to dip into the ‘mood-boosting’ reading list.
