NOTHING IS TOO MUCH FOR FIRST BOOKSHOP!

We are all becoming accustomed to an impersonal world – one of faceless call-centres, computerised answering services, indefinite periods of waiting on line to speak to a real person, who is rarely able to solve our problem when we finally get to speak to them, of internet websites which seem to offer everything but the service that we really need and are incapable of dealing with exceptions. And so it is more than refreshing – it is a cause to celebrate – when you stumble upon an outfit like First Bookshop UK, who offer their customers all the advantages of the hi-tech impersonal world without becoming impersonal. They are fast, efficient, have an easy-to-use website, but they also have the flexibility, intelligence and warmth of a small business for which nothing is too much to keep its customers happy. My thanks to Roger at First Bookshop UK for stepping in - immediately - and sorting out my problem; dealing with an exception swiftly, efficiently and with a finesse that the big boys of our impersonal world just could not match.

30 YEARS THIS MONTH SINCE OUR FIRST BOOKSHOP OPENED!

Bookshop premises one opened at 4A Main Street, Garforth, Leeds, exactly 30 years ago. Garfield performed the official opening ceremony a week or so after our doors opened to the public for the very first time!

Roger Crossland, the founder, continues to run the Bookshop online today, after our Main Street lease ran out in 2012, heralding the imminent closure of Bookshop premises two, which had been relocated by us to 15 Main Street, Garforth, Leeds during 1997.

Up until 2003 the shop always price matched with amazon.co.uk and was the very first Bookshop in the UK to ever do that, however these days the majority of books you can purchase online via our website, will now cost you less when paying with a credit card or debit card (not by Book Tokens). Anyone noticed recently how expensive Amazon's non-top-ten have become, where have all those big book discounts gone for all?

WORLD BOOK DAY WINNER 2017

EAST RIDING SCHOOL WINS WORLD BOOK DAY 20th ANNIVERSARY AWARD!

Winner of the World Book Day Award has been revealed as an East Yorkshire school, after it faced three years of “struggling” to expand its books offering from "one meagre bookshelf" into a library. The announcement comes as a raft of events kick off to celebrate WBD’s 20th anniversary (2nd March 2017).
Cherry Burton Primary School in East Yorkshire won £5,000 of books for its ‘Old Curiosity Shop’ which saw the Church of England school’s summer playhouse transformed into the shop featured in the classic novel by Charles Dickens.
A World Book Day spokesperson said the "massive influx" of the prize would help the school expand the library, after three difficult years of fundraising. He said: “Designed to convey the 'individual experience' of reading, the shop was filled with displays and crafts made by the children, sparked by their favourite books, which ranged from Owl Babies (Walker) to The Snail and the Whale (Macmillan) and The BFG (Puffin). The massive influx of £5,000 worth of new children’s books provides fresh hope to a school that has spent the last three years struggling to fundraise to expand their collection of books from just one bookshelf into a fully-fledged library.” Sarah Shepherdson, literacy coordinator at Cherry Burton, said: “We’re honoured and thrilled to have been awarded first prize for our entry to the World Book Day Award. The children all worked incredibly hard and loved exploring and interpreting their favourite books for the project. The addition of £5,000 worth of books to our school library is a dream come true. Three years ago, our library consisted of one meagre bookshelf, and while we have come a long way since then, there is no doubt that this prize will be life-changing for our pupils.”
