My World Famous Neighbour

By Roger Crossland - Senior Partner of The Token House Partnership & Founder of First Bookshop (2000) and Garforth Bookshop (1987).

Imagine my surprise a few years back when I discovered that the most famous living artist David Hockney resided just up the road from me. A friend of mine had to point out exactly which house this was, but now it never ceases to amaze me! As I understand, this was originally his Mother's house, but after she died at the grand old age of 99 he decided to move in - must have been the stunning sea views that won him over! So many world famous artists did not reach the peak of their success until after they died, but David Hockney has been successful since the 1960's and although today aged in his mid 70's his innovative career just goes from strength to strength, currently showing a considerable number of his works at The Royal Academy of Arts from 21 January - 9 April 2012.

The following has been taken from their website at :

The Royal Academy of Arts presents the first major exhibition of new landscape works by David Hockney RA. Featuring vivid paintings inspired by the East Yorkshire landscape, these large-scale works have been created especially for the galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts.

'David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture' spans a 50 year period to demonstrate Hockney’s long exploration and fascination with the depiction of landscape.

The exhibition includes a display of his iPad drawings and a series of new films produced using 18 cameras, which are displayed on multiple screens and provide a spellbinding visual journey through the eyes of David Hockney.

Theatre Tokens - Outstanding Performance

Theatre Tokens, the unique theatre gift voucher scheme run by The Society of London Theatre (SOLT), saw sales of almost £10million in 2011, in spite of pressure on the high street and the continuing economic downturn. This record breaking performance can be celebrated as further demonstration of the resilience of the theatre industry and the popularity of theatre amongst UK consumers in the face of squeezed incomes, high inflation and economic gloom.

More people than ever before chose to give Theatre Tokens, which are valid at theatres across the country with no expiry date, as the gift of theatre for Christmas 2011. Online sales channels saw the biggest increase in 2011, with online sales up over 25%. Phone sales via the Tokenline hotline were also up 10% on 2010.

Sales of Theatre Tokens are dependent on strong pre-Christmas trading, with over 50% of total sales taking place in the fourth quarter. This year saw a trend of late purchasing on the part of the consumer with sales steady in October but up significantly in November and December.

The Theatre Tokens Christmas campaign helped to generate these strong November and December sales with promotions and advertising on London Underground and commuter routes into London, in the national press, on Classic FM radio, and online.

Theatre Tokens plans to continue to grow its business by exploring and exploiting new methods of selling to consumers. With 2012 come plans to work with key suppliers to utilise mobile platforms and Facebook channels, as well as exploring options for the distribution of e-vouchers.

Christmas Book Tokens

Quote from PD James - Author :

"One of the main problems at Christmas is finding suitable presents and all too often we spend time and money on gifts which are neither needed nor particularly wanted. The one present which I have found is always the pleasure of personal choice, the certainty of satisfaction, is easy to send and convenient to buy. In particular children love Book Tokens because of the fun of choice, and so no present is more useful for instilling a love of books and for teaching children that a bookshop is not intimidating but a place of pure pleasure".
