TWITTER

Twitter now has more than 10million users in the UK, the social networking site has revealed. Of the site’s 140million users, 10million are from the UK, which is thought to be the fourth-largest country for users in the world, behind the US, Brazil and Japan. Top tweeter Stephen Fry has more than 4.2 million followers on the social networking site. The company also revealed that 80% of UK users access the site through their mobile phone – a rate that is 45% higher than the world average – showing the popularity of the site to Britons on the go. “Growth recently has been very sharp and the biggest Twitter spike we have seen was after the riots last year,” Kate Bussmann, social media consultant and author of ‘A Twitter Year: 365 Days in 140 Characters’, told Yahoo! News. “People are increasingly turning to Twitter first to get their news and this was clearly seen in the riots. It was citizen reporting that let people know what was going on outside their front doors and that drove a lot of people to sign up to the site. “In the UK we spend a lot of time indoors watching TV or in pubs watching football and both are massive drivers of Twitter use here,” she added. “We love to tweet while watching TV, watching X-Factor while Twitter is on so we can see what people are saying.” One of the key attributes of the social network allows you to group comments about certain topics together, by adding the # symbol to a keyword. This process, known as “hashtagging”, allows users to see what everyone else is writing about certain topics and join the conversation themselves. Broadcasters have taken advantage of the popularity of the social network, adding hashtags to TV show credits. ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, ‘Have I got News For You’, ‘My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding’ and ‘The Only Way is Essex’ are just a sample of this, with all three forming common Twitter trending topics during their prime-time slots. “What you don’t get on Facebook is this ongoing dialogue between lots and lots of people and TV companies are clued into this now,” Ms Bussmann said. “One thing ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ is doing is putting hashtags up as people are still performing, promoting within their own show hashtag. By doing this they are creating mini conversations, then tracking it all to see how they are doing.” The technique for driving Twitter conversation has also been adopted by political campaigns, music festivals and sporting events, with the Manchester City FC bus showing the hashtag “#together” during the team’s Premiership celebrations on Monday. “A lot of people sign up and don’t really get it, there is a tipping point of following around 25 people when it becomes interesting,” Ms Bussmann added. “In the future Twitter is looking to break down this barrier as it is problem.” SOURCE: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/twitter-tops-10-million-uk-users.html

My World Famous Neighbour

By Roger Crossland - Senior Partner of The Token House Partnership & Founder of First Bookshop (2000) and Garforth Bookshop (1987).

Imagine my surprise a few years back when I discovered that the most famous living artist David Hockney resided just up the road from me. A friend of mine had to point out exactly which house this was, but now it never ceases to amaze me! As I understand, this was originally his Mother's house, but after she died at the grand old age of 99 he decided to move in - must have been the stunning sea views that won him over! So many world famous artists did not reach the peak of their success until after they died, but David Hockney has been successful since the 1960's and although today aged in his mid 70's his innovative career just goes from strength to strength, currently showing a considerable number of his works at The Royal Academy of Arts from 21 January - 9 April 2012.

The following has been taken from their website at :
http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitions/hockney/

The Royal Academy of Arts presents the first major exhibition of new landscape works by David Hockney RA. Featuring vivid paintings inspired by the East Yorkshire landscape, these large-scale works have been created especially for the galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts.

'David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture' spans a 50 year period to demonstrate Hockney’s long exploration and fascination with the depiction of landscape.

The exhibition includes a display of his iPad drawings and a series of new films produced using 18 cameras, which are displayed on multiple screens and provide a spellbinding visual journey through the eyes of David Hockney.

Theatre Tokens - Outstanding Performance

Theatre Tokens, the unique theatre gift voucher scheme run by The Society of London Theatre (SOLT), saw sales of almost £10million in 2011, in spite of pressure on the high street and the continuing economic downturn. This record breaking performance can be celebrated as further demonstration of the resilience of the theatre industry and the popularity of theatre amongst UK consumers in the face of squeezed incomes, high inflation and economic gloom.

More people than ever before chose to give Theatre Tokens, which are valid at theatres across the country with no expiry date, as the gift of theatre for Christmas 2011. Online sales channels saw the biggest increase in 2011, with online sales up over 25%. Phone sales via the Tokenline hotline were also up 10% on 2010.

Sales of Theatre Tokens are dependent on strong pre-Christmas trading, with over 50% of total sales taking place in the fourth quarter. This year saw a trend of late purchasing on the part of the consumer with sales steady in October but up significantly in November and December.

The Theatre Tokens Christmas campaign helped to generate these strong November and December sales with promotions and advertising on London Underground and commuter routes into London, in the national press, on Classic FM radio, and online.

Theatre Tokens plans to continue to grow its business by exploring and exploiting new methods of selling to consumers. With 2012 come plans to work with key suppliers to utilise mobile platforms and Facebook channels, as well as exploring options for the distribution of e-vouchers.
